A journey During The Pandemic

A journey during the pandemic
By Nataly Wood

As for many other people, my dream of keep on travelling was coming true again. I was preparing for an eleven-day trip to South Korea. A dream adventure with my boyfriend, kusjes and knuffeltjes all over the place, a lot of fun and the perfect trip. Out of the eleven days planned, we stayed in Japan only for three. We were forced to cancel the trip to Busan (a beautiful place on the southeast coast of South Korea). After this short period of time each went in their own direction, he went to Japan and I went to Malaysia. This is when the pandemic was announced. I had to return to my country (Paraguay) before the world was shut down.

On my way back I was really trying to take all the advised precautions. Imagine, I had to travel through five major airports to return (Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Sao Paulo, Asunción). All the big airports were crowded, buzzing like a beehive under attack. Everything was crowded some people were taking a lot of care, others were getting offended if I asked them to keep their distance.

Unfortunately during my journey I saw so many people behaving as they were the only ones inhabiting the space. Hoarding at the supermarkets, coughing and sneezing in the air.
But I also encountered many people fulfilling their work with quiet eyes, with a mask as their protection. It made me think of how we take things for granted… time, resources, compassion, empathy, patience, hugs and freedom.

As for now, all I know is that things will never be the same. Letting go of certainty has never been so urgent. Meanwhile, the earth (our mother) is resting for the first time since the beginning of human existence.

Hopefully, there will be an outbreak in our minds as well.
